Johnson among decade's top prep athletes
Yuma High graduate Jacquelyn Johnson was named one of Arizona's top high school athletes of the decade by the Arizona Republic.
Johnson, who competed for the Criminals in track and field and basketball, won 14 state championships, set state a record in the 100-meter hurdles and was the Arizona Gatorade Athlete of the Year as a senior.
Johnson's success continued at Arizona State before eventually becoming an Olympian in the heptathlon as a member of the 2008 U.S. Track & Field team. Her efforts in helping the Sun Devil women win the 2008 NCAA indoor track and field championship was No. 9 on the the newspaper's list of ASU non-football stories.
Slated No. 3 on the newspaper's list of prep stars, Johnson is joined by nine other athletes including NBA point guard Jerryd Bayless and Stanford center Kayla Pedersen. The top athlete on the Republic's list is Canyon del Oro softball pitcher Kenzie Fowler, a two-time Gatorade National Player of the Year in her sport.
