Matador volleyball wins two in San Diego



No. 9 Arizona Western won two and lost one in the first day of the San Diego City College Volleyball Classic on Saturday.

The Matadors beat Chaffey 25-20, 25-19 and Cuyamaca 25-13, 25-10 but lost 25-19, 25-27, 15-12 to Cypress.

In the win against Chaffey, sophomore Carolyn Sosa had a team-high 14 digs for the Matadors while sophomore Paula Rosa had seven kills.

Rosa upped that total and had 12 kills in the loss against Cypress.

In the win against Cuyamaca, freshman outside hitter Marisha Herbert led the team with seven kills and two blocks and Rachel Rutherford added two aces.

The Matadors return to action when they travel to Thatcher to take on Eastern Arizona at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
