PREP BASEBALL

San Luis edges Kofa

Kofa’s comeback came up a hit short in a 9-8 loss to San Luis on Thursday.

The Kings trailed 9-7 in the bottom of the seventh. Hector Valenzuela and Manny Camacho hit back-to-back doubles to draw within one, but a groundout to short ended the game.

Kofa led 2-0 after one and 5-3 after three. San Luis scored four in the fourth to take the lead, but the Kings tied it in the bottom of the fifth. The Sidewinder scored solo runs in the sixth and seventh.

PREP SOFTBALL

Raiders open with two wins

Cibola opened the Sandra Day O’Connor/Deer Valley Invitational with a sweep Thursday, beating Mountain Ridge 10-9 than beating Westview 9-4.

Against Mountain View, Cibola led 10-4 in the bottom of the sixth and final inning, but Jackie Pierson gave up five runs before slamming the door. Three of the runs in the inning were unearned, scoring after a two-out error.

Bethany Olea, Pierson and Melissa Padilla each hit two-run home runs for the Raiders. Mariah Caro was 3-for-5 and Padilla was 3-for-4.

In the late game, Brandi Badilla picked up the win after Westview led 4-2 after five. Padilla, Isabella Olea, and Hannah Lackey hit doubles in the sixth, with Lackey’s bringing home the go-ahead run.

Padilla was 4-for-4 with a home run and two doubles, while Amanda Hernandez added two hits.

Hawks go 1-1 in pool play

Gila Ridge (5-7) started off the Sandra Day O’Connor/Deer Valley Invitational by splitting its first two games on Thursday. The Hawks lost the tournament opener to Avondale-Westview by a 7-4 margin before beating Phoenix-North Canyon 6-4 in five-inning game.

Nikki Kelland was charged with the loss against Westview, while Candi Kelland when 3-for-3 and Summer Ehrig went 1-for-2 with a pair of RBIs.

Erica Derma picked up the win against North Canyon, thanks to a go-ahead RBI double by Candi Kelland in the fourth inning. Madison Covey also chipped in, going 2-for-4.

The Hawks will face Phoenix-Greenway at 11:30 today.

PREP GIRLS TENNIS

Antelope rolls NWC

The Rams moved to 2-2 and 2-1 2A/3A West with an 8-1 victory over Northwest Christian at the Phoenix Tennis Center on Thursday.

Antelope swept singles play, as No. 1 Katlyn Jones (10-6), No. 2 Lindy Murdock (10-3), No. 3 Jessica Shaw (10-2), No. 4 Guadalupe Izaguirre (10-5), No. 5 Alma Moreno (10-8) and No. 6 Joanna Pratt (10-10 (7-5)) all won. Jones and Murdock also claimed an 8-5 doubles victory.

"It was a good win," Antelope coach Ben Chmielewski said. "They played very well and didn’t make a lot of mistakes. We have a couple of big matches coming up, so it was good to win convincingly."
