ON DECK: Kofa's streak ends
A few days ago I watched a three-year home winning streak fall.
Kofa had not lost on its home field since 2009. In 2009, I barely knew what I was going to do with my life. In 2009, I was more worried about Ken Griffey Jr. signing with the Mariners than where I'd be in three years.
I had the San Luis-Kofa match circled on my calendar ever since I was given the soccer beat at the Yuma Sun. I'd seen both teams play Cibola, and they just looked like they were playing on a whole other level.
When I got to Irv Pallack Field last Wednesday, the match didn't disappoint.
It was physical, it was tough. There were over 20 fouls, multiple yellow cards and even a red card.
Of course, the game came down to a controversial handball in the box call which led to a PK for San Luis. Other than that and a Kofa own goal, there was no scoring.
It was the kind of soccer I love watching, and I'll be looking forward to the next one in a few weeks.
