PREP WRESTLING
Urquijo shines for Sidewinders
Six wrestlers went 3-0 and Carlos Urquijo came as close to perfect as possible as San Luis swept its three matches at Tolleson on Wednesday.
Urquijo won by pin in all three of his matches and didn't give up a point.
“It was just a complete match,” Sidewinder coach Rob Jankowski said of his 220-pounder. “And these weren't pushovers either. It was good competition.”
Anthony Vallejo (120), Gator Contreras (132), Nick Egas (138), Jose Garcia (144) and Isaac Zavala (182 and 195) went 3-0. Ubaldo Soto and Jose Felix combined to go perfect at heavyweight, with Soto recording two pins.
“We just love coming to Phoenix,” Jankowski said. “It helps out so we're not wrestling the same kids over and over from Cibola, from Gila Ridge, from Yuma High. It was fresh meat today, and the kids really fed on it.”
Gila Ridge wins pair at Havasu
Gila Ridge wrestling coach Dave King was expecting at least five matches. He'll settle on two wins.
The Hawks topped Estrella Foothills 75-0 and Lake Havasu 54-18 Wednesday at Havasu after two teams left early, according to King.
Nathan Mendivil (106), Austin Gerber (120), Curtis Cox (126) and Isaac Saenz (152) recorded two pins each for the Hawks.
Antelope 1-2 at Wickenburg
The Antelope wrestling team topped Valley Christian 30-24 Wednesday at a four-team meet in Wickenburg.
The Rams lost 48-28 to the host school and 60-18 to Chino Valley.
Casey Pearson (132) and Fred Pearson (160) each went 3-0, with Casey Pearson recording three pins while his younger brother notched two. Jason St. Clair (138) and Rayden Baker (HWT) each went 2-1 with two pins each, the only other Rams with winning records.
