Street soccer league starting in San Luis
Organizers of a street soccer league in San Luis are recruiting teams from around Yuma County for the inaugural season slated to begin Feb. 5.
The Futbol Calle League will consist of 12 to 16 eight- to 10-member teams that will play on the basketball court at Joe Orduno Park, 965 N. Park Ave., in San Luis, on Tuesday and Thursday evenings through April.
Six teams have committed to playing in the league, but teams from around the county are being invited to take part, said Omar Heredia, a San Luis resident who is a co-organizer of league.
Irving Garcia, a former San Luis High School soccer standout who went on to play with the New York Red Bulls in Major League Soccer, is slated to help kick off the inaugural league on the first evening.
Players can range in age from 16 to adult.
Heredia said area residents interested in fielding teams for the league can call him at 661-862-9348.
