Freya Newton made the one free throw she needed to with 1 second left, lifting Gillette over the Arizona Western women's basketball team 63-62 at the Husky Invitational Friday in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Gillette (4-0) handed the No. 17 Matadors (3-1) their first loss on the year as they prepare to conclude the tournament today against Sheridan at 10 a.m.
Newton was fouled attempting a 3-point shot with one second left and made only one of the three opportunities.
Samantha Wallace led the Matadors with 19 while Emilie Muanandibu had 16. Lisette Longomo left the game in the first half with a shoulder injury and did not return.
“I was proud of our team as they dealt with a lot of adversity during the game,” coach Patrick Cunningham said. “We made lemonade with a lot of lemons, but there just wasn't enough sweetener at the end, even though we had a chance to win it.”

AWC holds off Snow
Marvin Whitt made a pair of free throws with nine seconds left, capping a 26-point performance to lead Arizona Western past Snow 76-74 on Friday at the PCAndrews Classic in Sells.
The Matadors (2-1) trailed until about 10 minutes remaining in the game. Snow (3-1) missed a winning 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Aaseem Dixon had 12 and Carlos Perez 10 for AWC, which plays again at 2 p.m. today against Salt Lake.
“We played great defense in the second half against a really good team,” coach Charles Harral said. “This was a great team win, and I'm very proud of our players.”
