Matadors win two in Scottsdale tournament
Arizona Western made quick work of New Mexico Military on Friday, beating them 25-22, 25-13 in the Scottsdale Volleyball Classic.
Before that win, they swept Mesa 25-20, 25-18.
The Matadors (3-1 in Arizona Community College Athletic Conference, 5-1 overall) were led against NMMI (6-3) by sophomore middle blocker and freshman outside hitter Amber Graham, both of whom had six kills. Melissa Wong, a freshman defensive specialist from San Luis, had a team-high 16 digs.
Wong added 10 digs against the Thunderbirds (1-3) in the early game. Amanda Watkins had a team-high five kills.
The No. 11 Matadors will face No. 12 Florida State College of Jacksonville at 8 a.m. today in the third game of the tournament.
