McEvoy named Player of the Week, Matadors No. 2
Not only did Arizona Western's dominating 63-38 win over Scottsdale on Saturday catapult the Matadors to No. 2, the record-setting performance of quarterback Tanner McEvoy did not go unnoticed.
McEvoy was named the Western States Football League Player of the Week after setting school records with 417 passing yards and five touchdowns, a win that moved the Matadors up three spots in the NJCAA poll.
And it's on the heels of that strong performance that the school and the Caballeros announced that tickets for the 2012 El Toro Bowl Presented by Alexander Automotive Group will go on sale at 9 a.m. today.
Unlike last year's version of the bowl — a 55-47 loss by the No. 1 Matadors to No. 2 East Mississippi in the national championship game — there will be only reserved seating. All tickets will be $13. The game will be 1 p.m. Dec. 1 at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Tickets will be available on eltorobowl.com, BillAlexanderFord.com, myalexandertoyota.com and flightlinemazda.com. Tickets will also be available at the Caballeros de Yuma office, 180 1st St., or the AWC Athletics Office on campus.
Proceeds from the bowl game and its related events will benefit several areas, including scholarships at Arizona Western College, as well as allow the Caballeros de Yuma to continue to provide and attract events that positively impact the quality of life in the Yuma community.
In the meantime, the Matadors head to unranked Eastern Arizona for a game against the rival Gila Monsters at 6 p.m. Saturday. McEvoy, who is a native of Hillsdale, N.J., and transferred to AWC for the University of South Carolina in mid-August, is expected to be under center.
