LOCAL GLANCE December 12: JUCO Basketball, Prep Wrestling, Prep Boys Soccer

Chandler-Gilbert Community College made three big runs at the Matadors but were unable to gain the lead as the AWC men's basketball team held on to win their eighth straight game.

Marvin Whitt and Aaseem Dixon led the Matadors in scoring with 19 points a piece. The Matadors never trailed but allowed at 20-7 Chandler-Gilbert run in the second half to tie the game at 51 apiece.

With the Matadors ahead by three points in the final seconds, Chandler-Gilbert went across the floor and scored on a frantic shot, but the shooter was just inside the three-point line which gave AWC the 76-75 win.

The Matadors improved their overall record to 11-3 while remaining a perfect 6-0 in conference play.

AWC defeats

Chandler-Gilbert

The Matadors defeated Chandler-Gilbert Community College 69-49 Wednesday.

Samantha Wallace led the scoring effort with 18 points while Emilie Muanandibu was not far behind with 16. The Matadors led by as many as 26 and were never ahead by less than 12.

Starting guard Imari Lyons left the game with 6:13 left in the first half with an ankle injury and did not return.

PREP WRESTLING

Hawks pin Kings

Gila Ridge defeated Kofa 58-10 in their dual meet Wednesday.

Hawks wrestler Colt Collier (113) bounced back, beating a wrestler who handed him a loss last weekend at the Cholla Duals Tournament. Collier won the match by pin.

Other highlights for Gila Ridge included Levi Riley (145) and William King-Britt (170), who both won by pin.

Up next, Gila Ridge takes on San Luis and Cibola next Wednesday.

Raider defeats

ranked wrestler

Cibola defeated Brawley 49-18 Wednesday in a match that included Luis Nunez (138) defeating a ranked California opponent.

“Brawley's one of the toughest teams in the San Diego Region,” said Raider head coach Mike Jankowski. “Nunez beat a kid that was ranked seventh or eighth in California, and they only have one division.”

Besides Nunez, Cibola had four wrestlers win by pin, including Andres Gandara (126), Isaac Camarillo (132), Cisco Reyes (182) and Mark Siqueros (220).

“Overall we looked good and wrestled well,” Jankowski said. “We took control when we needed to, finished things when we needed to. We're going to keep building up towards the end of the season.”

PREP BOYS SOCCER

Shamrocks beat Mesa Prep

Yuma Catholic scored nine goals in the first half and two in the second to beat Mesa Prep Academy 11-0 Wednesday.

The Shamrocks got all their players into the blowout win which improved their record to 2-4.
