ON DECK: Montoya's decision not overly surprising
Bernie Montoya had any program a runner would dream of knocking on his door.
Considering I am from Oregon, I understand how prestigious the University of Oregon is when it comes to a runner. There's Steve Prefontaine, Galen Rupp (who picked up a silver medal in the 2012 Olympics) and the outstanding facilities that Nike has to offer.
Instead, Montoya decided on Arizona State.
He told me about how their coach Louie Quintana was a top recruit back in his day and made an unusual decision to go to Villanova. After Quintana, plenty of recruits followed and eventually helped the Wildcats to a Top 10 finish twice.
This is the same route Montoya could be taking as he decided to stay in the Arizona sun. He repeats about how Arizona State felt like home and it just felt right.
However, anybody who's talked to Montoya for any amount of time shouldn't be surprised by his decision.
Plus I went to Oregon St., so I hate the Ducks and I'm not complaining he passed on Oregon.
