ON DECK: Music at AWC games

The Arizona Western basketball teams are playing their regular season home finale today.

There is an interesting dichotomy I've noticed whenever I've covered a Matador basketball game, and it has to do with the music.

Usually, the majority of the people in the stands are from the Greatest Generation while the players are either 19 or 20 years old. Which leads to an interesting problem: What kind of music do you play during warm-ups? The players get pumped up and ready to play while hearing loud hip-hop music. I imagine today's hip-hop music is irritable to the people in the crowd — and that's putting it nicely.

Instead of Chubby Checker, the gym's PA system blasts Rick Ross.

Likewise, I don't think the players would enjoy warming up to Johnny Cash singing about a ring of fire.

I always find it interesting when generations clash, and the warm-up music at Matador games seems to be just that. A potential cure to keep the athletes pumped up with something pleasing to the crowd's ear? Have the AWC band and local prep bands play before games.
