ON DECK: Alternative name suggestions for the Yuma Panthers
When I told anybody about the new name for the Yuma baseball team, the most common reaction was “Really, the Panthers?”
Obviously, a Scorpion makes sense in the desert. Why a Panther?
Apparently, there was a team in 1950 out here that went by the Yuma Panthers. So the new name is to honor that team.
But that was 62 years ago, and not many people seem to remember that.
If the new ownership group wanted a fresh slate, why not something cool? Like the Yuma Yotes? Sure, Phoenix already had a Coyotes, but (a) they’re leaving soon and (b) that’s why you go “Yotes.”
Or how about the Yuma Rolled Tacos? Or the Yuma, We’re Sorrys? Or the Yuman Beings?
Obviously the new group wanted something that honored the area, which is obviously a good thing. But this seemed like over thinking a little bit.
Now just one question remains — what will become of Stinger?
