PREP SOCCER
Playoff bracket announced
Four soccer teams earned spots in the AIA state playoffs in the brackets posted on the AIA website Friday.
San Luis and Kofa both made the boys Division I bracket, with the No. 11 Kings facing No. 6 Gilbert in a 5 p.m. game Wednesday at Mesa-Corona del Sol. Also 5 p.m. Wednesday, the No. 10 Sidewinders will take on No. 7 Alhambra at Phoenix-Carl Hayden.
On the girls side, Kofa earned the seventh seed and will host No. 10 Scottsdale-Chaparral at 5 p.m. Tuesday. In Division III, Yuma Catholic just missed out on a home game, instead taking the ninth seed and traveling to Xavier Prep to face Scottsdale at 3 p.m. Tuesday.
State quarterfinal games for all divisions will be Feb. 2.
PREP WRESTLING
Nine Hawks lined up for titles
Nine Gila Ridge wrestlers advanced to today’s semifinals at a tournament at Tucson-Salpointe Catholic as the Hawks finished the first day in first place.
The players in the semis for the Hawks were Nathan Mendivil (103), Austin Gerber (112), Curtis Cox (126), Kyle Ford (132), Levi Riley (138), Isaac Saenz (145), Sam Kuckuk (170), Emilio Castro (195) and Kainoa Renaud (220).
The other five wrestlers were set up for third-place finishes.
PREP BOYS BASKETBALL
Yuma Catholic tops Parker
Coach Brooks Neumann said his Yuma Catholic boys basketball team played close to perfect as the Shamrocks topped the Broncs 65-36 on the road Friday.
The Shamrocks led 47-11 at halftime.
“That was the best half I’ve ever been a part of,” Neumann said. “We didn’t make any mistakes. We played really good.”
Jagan Cleary and Carter Rodriguez scored 12 each for YC, while Grady Bourguignon and Peter Hurtado each added nine. In his first game in two weeks, Matt Pistone scored eight.
Gila Ridge edges Kofa
Defense was the key again for Gila Ridge and the Hawks beat Kofa 43-38 on Friday night.
Marcus Weeks scored 15 points and Dillon Chavez had eight for the Hawks.
"Our defense did it again in the second half," Gila Ridge coach Joe Daily said.
Kofa was led by Manny Camacho, who finished with eight points.
Cibola routs San Luis
Daniel Kirkland had 17 points as Cibola beat San Luis 87-43.
Brett Boyer added 15 and T.J. Smith had 14 for the Raiders. Jordan Mitchell had six rebounds and 10 assists.
PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL
Kofa holds off Gila Ridge
Kofa missed two free throws with six seconds left to keep Gila Ridge in the game, but the Hawks couldn’t convert in a 44-42 loss to the Kings Friday.
Adly Wiley scored a team-high 14 for the Kings and Mariah Carter scored 16 points for the Hawks. Gila Ridge got the rebound after the second missed free throw by Jasmine Ortiz, but the down court pass was stolen by Ortiz.
Raiders cruise past San Luis
Baylee Lakey had 20 points and 14 rebounds as Cibola topped San Luis 55-22 on Friday.
Alexis Evans had five rebounds for the Raiders.
San Pasqual tops Gila Bend
Ceara Ingraham scored 16 points and grabbed 18 rebounds in San Pasqual’s 45-35 win over Gila Bend.
Tatiana Damon added eight points and 13 rebounds for the Warriors
