Two Raiders earn provisional track times
The Aztec Last Chance Invitational lived up to its name for two Cibola track athletes.
Alonzo Perez hit a provisional state qualifying time in the 3,200-meter run, and Kiana Diehl hit a provisional mark in the 800, earning both likely trips to the Division I state meet next week.
Facing many teams they’ll be seeing next week, the Raider boys took second at the meet hosted by Corona del Sol.
Perez finished the 3,200 in 10 minutes, 11.15 seconds, while Diehl finished the 800 in 2:29.16.
Bernie Montoya set a school record and tied his own school record in the 1,600 and 3,200, respectively. He finished the 1,600 in 4:16 and the 3,200 in 9:22.48. The 1,600 relay team improved its provisional mark to 3:27.32, virtually guaranteeing a state trip.
Kelsey Pangrel also topped her best discus mark by almost six feet, throwing a 110-9.
The state meet starts Wednesday and concludes May 13.
