ON DECK: Western Worlds to Cocopah
A year ago, someone attending a news conference for the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series National Tour, which was coming to Cocopah Speedway for the first time in March 2012, asked what the chances were for the legendary Western World Championships to make the Somerton oval their home.
The Western Worlds have been around for a very long time and had evolved into ASCS's grand finale for its famous winged sprint car series.
As outrageous as the question sounded at the time, ASCS has since decided to move its grand finale to … Cocopah Speedway, in November this year.
That brings us to today. During Wednesday's IMCA Modified Winter Nationals presented by Sun Graphics news conference, two drivers from Iowa talked about moving the entire Winter Challenge Series, which starts in Phoenix, to Cocopah Speedway.
It should come as no surprise, because that seems to be the trend. Drivers, crews and officials fall in love with our oval and can't wait to come back.
So don't be surprised if – well, you know. Stay tuned.
