Two games into region play, and the Kofa girls tennis team has made a statement.
The Kings beat defending Gila Valley Region champion San Luis 5-4 on Friday, three days after beating runner-up Cibola.
Coach Danilo Montialli said Ashley Curiel and Jenny Glasgow got a big win at No. 3 doubles, breaking the 4-4 tie.
“They played very well and that was the key to the win for us,” Montialli said.
Curiel also won 6-4, 6-0 at No. 4 singles, beating Yamayra Castanos. Mirka Janikova picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win for San Luis at No. 1 singles. Michelle Mannon won at No. 2 singles, and Mannon and Janikova won at No. 1 doubles.
San Luis' winners were Audi Diaz at No. 3, Jennifer Curiel at No. 5 and Victoria Hernandez at No. 6. Curiel and Krystal Rodriguez also won at No. 1 singles for the Sidewinders.

Antelope steamrolls Julian
Antelope won its first game at the Warriors Invitational in Winterhaven, topping Julian 11-2.
All 11 Rams (3-4) who had an at-bat had a hit, but Colt Pelfry was the only one with a multihit game, going 2-for-2. Sam Perez pitched three innings for the win.
YC splits at home tourney
After giving up three runs in the bottom of the final inning against Show Low, Yuma Catholic recovered with a 9-8 comeback win of their own against Northwest Christian at the Shamrock Classic on Friday.
Against Northwest Christian, the Shamrocks trailed 8-2 after two innings. But Brady Sorenson came on in relief, three hitless shutout innings, and the offense rolled off seven runs in the third and fourth innings. Matt Koppinger was 3-for-3 while Wade McBride drove in three runs.
In the early game, YC led 7-5 heading into the bottom of the sixth but surrendered three runs. Julian Higuera had two doubles and a triple in the loss.
PREP GOLF
Antelope tops at 3-way
Antelope shot a 256 to beat El Centro-Central on Friday at Coyote Wash. Holtville did not qualify a team score.
Lane Adolf was the top Ram, taking fourth with a 45 — one stroke off the leaders. Skylar Salcido shot a 45 for fifth and Jacob Moore was sixth with a 49.

Kofa falls to San Luis
Kofa made things close against San Luis on Friday but fell 5-4 to the Sidewinders.
Ryan Thornburg picked up a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles. The only other singles winner was Santos Rangel, a 7-5, 6-1 winner. Thornburg and Rangel were also on Kofa's two winning doubles teams.
