ON DECK: Sports editor beats dad

Ever since I became a parent, I wondered what would happen if one of my children ended up playing sports and I was still a sports editor, how I would balance covering them fairly – especially if they were good – with not being perceived as biased.

Well, that day came Thursday. And about a decade earlier than I expected.

When our photographer got back from the Cibola basketball game, she was excited because she got a photo of a cute little girl imitating the flag line – a little girl who at the time she did not realize was my 4-year-old.

She liked the photo a lot, but in sports we generally run action, not fan photos. So as you can see from the photos I chose, the sports editor in me beat the parent.

However, the parent in me does want to point out that the photos do appear online. And are adorable.

(The parent in me may be calling my boss in the morning to complain as well.)
