No. 16 Kofa swept by No. 1 Horizon

The Kofa volleyball team ran into a juggernaut on Tuesday night.

The No. 16 Kings were swept 25-12, 25-9, 25-9 at No. 1 Horizon in the first round of the Arizona Interscholastic Association Division I State Tournament.

“My girls played well but it's hard to compete when they've never faced athletes like this before,” Kofa coach Brittany Garcia said. “They had five or six girls over 6-feet tall.”

Junior outside hitter Jasmine Ortiz had 10 kills for the Kings.

The loss ends the season for the Kings, who finished 15-3 on the year. It's there third straight state tournament appearance for Garcia and the Kings.

“As hard as it was, I think it's a real good experience for the girls to see the top competition in the state,” Garcia said. “I think my girls did really well this year and making state is a big accomplishment.”

With the loss by Kofa, Yuma Catholic is now the only area volleyball team in the state playoffs. The No. 12 Shamrocks face No. 5 Parker at 5 p.m. Thursday at Tim's Toyota Center in Prescott Valley.
