ON DECK: With or without Nash, Suns still stuck in limbo

If the Phoenix Suns were in the Eastern Conference, they’d be a playoff team next year.

Sure they lost Steve Nash. But they are set to pick up Goran Dragic and Michael Beasley, plus may land Eric Gordon.

Add that to a steadily improving Jared Dudley and their mediocre center platter of Marcin Gortat and Robin Lopez, and you’ve got yourself a 38-win club.

That’s a date to play the top team in the East, the Chicago Bulls, in the first round — which will lead to a win when five starters and for some reason Scottie Pippen all suffer injuries in Game 2 of the series.

But the Suns are in the West. And 38 wins is about 10 games back of the final playoff spot.

With or without Nash, the Suns are mired in mediocrity — not good enough for the playoffs, not bad enough for a worthwhile draft pick.
