Catron leads Super Regional
Collin Catron didn't let a double bogey on No. 9 and a bogey on No. 18 get in the way of him shooting a sub-70 round and taking the Day 1 individual lead at the 5A-II Super Regional.
Catron's 3-under 69 gave him a one-shot edge on Monday at the Aguila Golf Course in Laveen, but his Gila Ridge team struggled to a 339 team score at the halfway mark for ninth place.
The top seven teams from the 16-team competition qualify for the state tournament. The Hawks are currently 11 shots out of seventh place.
"Collin played well all day long, but everyone else was definitely above what they expected to shoot," Gila Ridge coach David Schultz said. "We can't expect Collin to shoot another 69 so everyone will have to pick it up, but they're all more than capable of doing so."
Among the other scores Gila Ridge posted was sophomore Tyson Swenson's 86.
In the other super regional, Cibola is 12th of 15 teams after the first round with a 398 team score.
