Matadors lose final match at Scottsdale tourny
With four wins already under their belts at the Scottsdale Volleyball Classic, the players on the Arizona Western volleyball team couldn't make it a perfect 5 for 5.
The No. 11 Matadors ended their day Saturday with a 25-18, 27-25 loss to Central Wyoming — a day that started with a 25-21, 25-18 win over No. 12 Florida State College-Jacksonville.
“Overall for the tournament, we played very well and came together as a team quite a bit,” coach Jason Smith said. “I am disappointed that we couldn't concentrate for a little longer to finish undefeated. We learned a lot this weekend, and hopefully we can use that for the rest of the season.”
Against FSCJ, Marisha Herbet had eight kills while Amanda Watkins had three blocks. The Matadors improved to 4-0 in the tournament with a 23-25, 25-17, 15-12 win over Arizona Community College Athletic Conference foe South Mountain. Herbert and Rosa each had nine kills, Melissa Wong had three aces and Amber Graham had 18 digs. In the finale, Polina Severina had six kills, while Graham and Kylee Chun had six digs each for the Matadors (7-2), who resume ACCAC play Wednesday at Eastern Arizona.
