LOCAL GLANCE Nov. 10: JUCO, youth basketball

Marvin Whitt scored a game-high 25 points, but it wasn't enough for the Arizona Western men's basketball team Saturday against Salt Lake 103-95 at the PCAndrews Classic at Topawa, Ariz.

The Matadors (2-2) led by as much as 14 in the first half, but Salt Lake (3-0) tied the game with five minutes left in regulation. After a tight first overtime, Salt Lake pulled away for the win.

“Our defense is going to improve a great deal as the season goes along,” AWC coach Charles Harral said. “Right now, we aren't where we need to be defensively as a team, and we aren't doing a good job of helping each other. We are going to work on that Monday and Tuesday to see if we can get it corrected.”

Keywhon Powns (19), Tanner Clayton (14) and Carlos Perez (12) all scored double figures for the Matadors, who return to Topawa for their Arizona Community College Athletic Conference opener against Tohono O'odham, which is making its ACCAC debut Wednesday.

JUCO WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

AWC tops Sheridan

The Arizona Western women's basketball team rolled Saturday to a 69-62 win over Sheridan in the final game of the Husky Invitational in Colorado Springs.

The Matadors (4-1) won despite missing Lisette Longomo and with Emilie Muanandibu battling a knee injury. Muanandibu scored 15.

“It was a courageous effort today,” coach Patrick Cunningham said. “Emilie's knee wasn't good, Lisette was out, so I was very proud of (our team's) effort today. I think we really matured as a team this morning, since it was our best team effort of the season.”

The Matadors led by 12 at halftime, a lead that shrunk to two but never smaller in the second half.

The Matadors play a non-conference game against conference foe Tohono O'odham on Wednesday.
