Matadors perfect at Jack Howell Classic
The Arizona Western baseball team won both games Saturday to end with a perfect record at the Jack Howell Classic at Pima Community College.
The Matadors beat Miles (Mt.) Community College 3-0 and No. 18 GateWay 10-0 on Saturday and won 9-2 against Eastern Arizona and 5-0 against Grays Harbor College (Wash.) on Friday.
Brandon Anderson improved to 5-0 on the mound by pitching 4 1/3 scoreless innings in the win over GateWay. Cibola grad Omar Celaya picked up his third save of the year by pitching the final two innings of the win against Miles.
Against Eastern Arizona, Travis Garcia-Perreira got his sixth win of the year by allowing one run in four innings and Jeremy Alderman improved to 4-3 with four scoreless innings of work against Grays Harbor.
JUCO SOFTBALL
Matadors split in Casa Grande
The Arizona Western softball team lost 4-1 to Odessa (Tex.) Community College and beat Illinois Central 6-1 in the Deanna Mauer Classic in Casa Grande on Saturday.
Hayley Miller (11-4) picked up the loss against Odessa and Briana VanSickle (10-4) threw five scoreless innings to pick up the win against Illinois Centra.
“We hit the ball hard all day, but in the first game we seemed to hit them straight to the defense,” Matador coach Nikki Bethurum said. “In the second game, the hits seemed to find the gaps.”
