LOCAL GLANCE (Jan. 17): Baseball, Softball, Boys Tennis

Cibola senior starting pitcher Zebastian Valenzuela pitched a complete game against Dobson and the Raiders won 4-2 on the road Thursday.

Valenzuela allowed three hits and two unearned runs and struck out seven for the win.

“He pitched very well,” Cibola coach Duane Evans said. “We booted a couple balls for him and he kept his poise.”

Johnny Ortiz broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the seventh by doubling home Adan Vega and Valenzuela later added an RBI sacrifice fly of his own. Tim Frost and Caeden Effington each had RBIs earlier in the game.

San Pasqual wallops West Shores

San Pasqual broke out their bats Thursday defeating West Shores 22-14.

Three of the Warriors players did not play due to disciplinary reasons which gave coach Faron Owl a chance to start some freshmen.

Luis Castenada started the game, pitching three innings and Tommy Gonzalez finished the seventh inning with three strikeouts.

Gonzalez and Andrew Momenes both went 4 for 4 with Momenes hitting a triple and three doubles. Sergio Bravo was also perfect on the day going 3 for 3.

The Warriors have scored 40 runs in their last three games.

Antelope splits at Gila Bend

Antelope split its first two games of the year at the Gila Bend tournament, beating the hosts 10-2 then losing to Whelms by the same score.

Alissa Cadell had six hits in the two games, including a triple, home runs and three RBIs in the first game and both runs in the nightcap.

Kayla Cruz had three hits and two RBI in the first game, picking up the win as well. Dani Agundez had two hits in the loss.

Yuma High shuts out San Luis in double header

Yuma High starter Bri Stephens injured her shoulder early in the first game, but Lezlie Morris took over in relief and pitched eight shutout innings to beat San Luis 10-0 and 13-0.

Despite the two run-rule victories, Yuma High coach Liz Huyck didn't see very much intensity.

“We came out flat,” she said. “When Bri was injured, it was kind of scary. We kind of settled down and scored some runs but the focus wasn't really there. It was good to walk out of there with the wins, but our intensity needs to be there for every game.”

Gila Ridge defeats Yuma High

The Criminals showed little resistance as they fell to Gila Ridge 9-0 Thursday afternoon.

The Hawks won nine sets 6-0 and won four matches without surrendering a game.

Rajinder Singh put was the lone Criminal to put up a fight, losing to Scotty Nickerson 6-4, 6-2.

“That was the one challenging match,” Gila Ridge coach Ben Holskin said. “(Nickerson) figured it out after a little while, but he definitely gave him a run for his money.”
