Kofa beats Gila Ridge in Mohave tournament
It wasn't the prettiest of conditions for the Gila Ridge softball team, and it wasn't the prettiest of results.
The Hawks lost 7-1 to Kofa and 8-1 to Sandra Day O'Connor in the Tournament of Champions in Mohave on Friday.
“The kids came out flat,” Gila Ridge coach Jaime McGalliard said about the loss to Kofa. “It was rainy and we didn't focus. We made mistakes and they capitalized.”
Gila Ridge and Sandra Day O'Connor were tied 1-1 in the fourth before the Eagles broke it open.
The Hawks continue the tournament at 9:30 a.m. today.
“The point of the tournament is to be prepared for the state tournament and build chemistry,” McGalliard said.
The Kings went 2-2 in their first four games at the tournament. Alondra Talapia drove in three runs in the win against the Hawks. Miranda Mendoza tossed a three-hitter to pick up the victory in the circle.
Later Friday, the Kings lost to Coronado (Nev.) 3-2 in extra innings.
The Kings are slated to play two more games today.
On Thursday, Kofa opened with a 7-0 loss to Nevada Foothills, with Mendoza taking the loss.
They recovered with an 8-4 win against Lake Havasu. Tapia had three doubles while Mendoza had a home run, a double and three RBIs. Sally Gastelo had a 4 for 4 game and Caila Mackabee had a home run and two RBIs. Sarai Camacho picked up the win and added two hits at the plate.
