Holtville at Antelope

Comments 0 | Recommend 0

Kickoff: 7 p.m. tonight

Last week:  Holtville (season opener); Antelope lost to Yuma Catholic 30-0.

Records: Vikings first game; Rams (0-1, 0-0 2A West Region).

Players to watch: QB Cody Rivera threw for 98 yards last week as the Rams managed just 131 yards of total offense. ... Robert Gibbs is the featured back in the Vikings' splitback veer offense.

Antelope coach John Blabe's comments: "The game against (Yuma) Catholic has helped us immensely. Usually we open against the local JV squad, win and don't see too much. We saw a lot of good things, we saw a lot of bad things. We saw the people who could play and the people who couldn't play. That's a big thing for us."

The lowdown: The key to success for Antelope will be running the ball, according to Blabe. The Rams were held to 33 yards rushing in last week's loss to Yuma Catholic. ... Keith Smith Jr. takes over as Holtville coach, after having spent virtually a lifetime at Brawley. He was ball boy when his father, now an assistant at Holtville, coached at Brawley. He played there and was an assistant there until taking the Vikings' job.
