Matadors LB Gregory likely out for year; Watkins wins ACCAC volleyball Player of the Week
Arguably the Arizona Western football team's best returning defensive player, Randy Gregory's season appears over before it barely even started.
The sophomore defensive lineman suffered a broken ankle in practice late last week and the team reports that chances are Gregory will most likely miss the rest of the season.
The 6-foot-5, 215-pound Gregory was a first team All-Western States Football League and first-team All-Arizona Community College Athletic Conference defensive lineman led the Matadors with nine sacks last season — including the team's only sack in Arizona Western's 55-47 loss to East Mississippi in the 2011 El Toro Bowl.
Gregory was already off to a hot start, recording a sack in the Matadors' season opening 49-14 win over Ellsworth.

Watkins named Player of the Week
For the second straight week, a Matador is the ACCAC Player of the Week.
Sophomore middle blocker Amanda Watkins was given the conference award for the second time in her career at Arizona Western. Watkins, who earned first team All-Region and all-ACCAC as a freshman, led the Matadors this past week to four wins at the Scottsdale Volleyball Classic last week.
Watkins' honor follows her teammate Marisha Herbert, who won the award last week.
The Matadors return to action on Wednesday, when they travel to face Eastern Arizona in a rematch of last season's Region I Finals.
