ON DECK: Don't trust the internet
When I was covering the Yuma Catholic playoff win against Parker on Friday night, a funny thing happened.
The game was wrapping up, and I checked my phone to see if there were any results in showing who the Shamrocks would face in the next round. The reported score on MaxPreps.com showed Pinon beating Scottsdale Christian 37-34 in overtime.
Since I'm relatively new to Arizona high school football, the statement didn't phase me. I wrote it down in my notes and headed down to the field to talk to Yuma Catholic head coach Rhett Stallworth.
I brought up the score of the game and he said, in so many words, “Shut up.”
I showed him my phone. Another coach confirmed it on his. Pinon wasn't supposed to win.
It turns out they didn't actually win. They were destroyed 55-0 at the hands of Scottsdale Christian, who the Shamrocks will face Saturday.
It did make for an interesting few minutes though.
