Hawks take second; Antelope finishes ninth

Hawks take second in Peoria

The Gila Ridge wrestling team used several key finishers to finish second in the Peoria Tournament of Champions on Saturday.

The Hawks, who scored 149.5 points, ended up behind Sunnyside in the 36-team tournament.

“All in all, I think they did well,” Gila Ridge coach David King said. “It was a good test for us as we gear up for state.”

Nathan Mendevil took second place at 106, Kainoa Renaud finished fourth at 220 and Colt Collier (113), Austin Gerber (120) and Curtis Cox (126) each took fifth place.

It was the first event for the Hawks since they lost 34-29 against Cibola on Dec. 19.

“The break is tough on everybody, but we had some good practices,” King said. “I don't think the break affected us too much.”

The Hawks host Yuma High and Calexico on Wednesday.

Antelope places ninth

The short-handed Antelope wrestling team finished ninth out of 16 teams at the Joseph City Invitational.

The Rams only brought six wrestlers to the tournament because of injuries, and Fred Pearson won first place at 160 and Rayden Baker took fifth at heavyweight.
