Yumans giddy up at Silver Spur Rodeo

The 64th annual Yuma Jaycees Silver Spur Rodeo was in full swing yesterday as cowboys and cowgirls from the U.S. and Canada competed in seven PRCA events and two local events in the Yuma County Fairgrounds arena.

Competition began as bareback riders burst from the shoots with horses ready to throw the cowboys before the 8 second clock could sound. Saturday afternoon's results landed Cimmaron Gerke from Brighton, Colo. in a great position with a score of 76. Forrie Smith, a 45-year-old cowboy from Capitan, N.M. rode his way to a 72. J.R. Chino form Mescalero, N.M. landed a 69 and Tom McFarland, who is 11th on the PRCA circuit, ended his ride with a 68 on Saturday after scoring a 74 on Friday. Saturday evening's scores were not available prior to publication.

Steer wrestlers were in the shoots next. Michael Bates from Mexian Springs, N.M. finished with the top time of 5.6 seconds with Jack Vanderlans of Temecula, Calif. going just a split second slower with a time of 5.8.

Calf roper Chris Wooten of Dos Palos, Calif. led the afternoon session with a time of 9.1 seconds, followed by Kyle Dutton of Las Cruces, N.M. in 9.4. Shawn Hastings of Gilbert scored 19.4 due to a penalty. Tyson Runyan of Silver City, N.M. and Chad Krainock of Paso Robles, Calif. also received penalties resulting in scores of 16.3 and 16.7, respectively.

Scores in the Saddle Bronc competition were hard to come by on Saturday. Only two cowboys made the 8 second ride. Darrell Triplett from Waterflow, N.M. scored 78 and Chanley Kay Iverson of Mocasin scored a 72.

The team roping was just as tough as only two teams out of 11 scored in the event. Dan Denmark of Santa Ysabel, Calif. and his partner, Randy Harris of Riverside, Calif. with a time of 6.1 seconds. But Jason Minor of Ellensburg, Wash. and Taylor White of Prosser were a bit faster, 5.4 seconds.

Times for the Barrel Racing on Saturday were not available prior to publication.

Competition resumes today at 1 p.m.
