Advance to state tournament

The Yuma Little League 9-10-year-old All-Star team went undefeated in its run through the District 9 Tournament, beating Lake Havasu South 8-3 Tuesday night at Southside Park in Kingman in the championship game.

Yuma capitalized on a seven-run fourth inning, and pitchers Jeremy Santana and Kevin Avila allowed just three hits after the first inning.

Havasu South led 2-1 after the first frame but never saw the lead again as Yuma collected six hits in the pivotal fourth inning, including doubles from Isaac Moreno and Claytin Valenzuela.

Yuma beat Lake Havasu North 13-9 in the semifinals.

"Those two (Lake Havasu) teams up there are some of the toughest I've ever seen, and I've been coaching for 25 years," Yuma coach Tony Moreno said. "My boys came out ahead and played at their best, and that's what won the games for us."

Other team members are Alex Olsen, Jose Gutierrez, Cobey Grande, Giovani Garcia, Sammy Garcia, Edgar Camarillo, Emilio Garibay and Oscar Ron.

The District 9 champions advanced to the 9-10 state tournament beginning July 17 in the Phoenix area. Families and businesses interested in making a donation to help with the team's expenses may contact Tony Moreno (446-4412) or Mandy Moreno (446-4084).
