Criminals sweep track meet at Carver Park
Comments 0 | Recommend 0Yuma Catholic senior Katelyn Williams has plenty of prep experience on the track, but Tuesday's meet at Carver Park against Yuma High and Gila Ridge felt like something new.
Williams raced for the first time in both the 200-meter dash and 100 high hurdles, placing second behind the Criminals' Bridgett Soares in the latter before winning the 200 in a time of 27.41.
Williams also blew away the competition in the 400 - winning by over nine seconds at 1:01.52 - and made up a big gap at anchor on the Shamrocks' winning 1600 relay team. She reached state qualifying marks in all her events, even though it wasn't a qualifying meet.
"You can only do four (competitions) at state, so I'm going to get the ones that are evenly spaced out and the ones that I like," Williams said. "I might find a new love for one of these events, but it's my senior year so I'm just having fun."
Williams' effort, however, wasn't enough to keep host Yuma from taking the girls team standings, as the Criminals put up 86 points, followed by YC (54) and the Hawks (27).
Yuma also edged out the Shamrocks on the boys side, 86-65, as J.C. Baker took titles in the long jump (20-1 1/2) and triple jump (43-1 1/2), and finished four-tenths of a second behind YC's Roderick Ford's winning time of 11.01 in the 100.
"We felt that our team performed very well - both boys and girls," Criminals assistant coach Chris Cooney said. "J.C. Baker won two events and had a personal best in the triple jump."
Yuma's Laruren Mohammed won the 1600 and 800 with personal-best times, while Soares added a first place in the 300 long hurdles.
Santos Castro won the boys 1600 meter run in 4:54 for the Criminals, which was a 10-second personal best, while teammate Cesar Villegas won the 3200 in 10:58, which trimmed 12 seconds off his personal best.
Gila Ridge had a pair of winners in Zarahy Haney (3200) and James Kendrick (400).
"We may have a couple of qualifiers in the sprinting events, but we're getting better every week," Hawks coach Duncan Sullivan said.
