The Phoenix-based 1st Battalion, 158th Infantry Army National Guard unit was one of the most heavily engaged Army units in Afghanistan in 2007. Sgt. Chris Dempsey from Yuma was part of this unit and is shown in this footage from a mission.

A granite plaque is hung at the city's Armed Forces Park in honor of Army Lt. and Yuma native Alejo Thompson, who killed in May while deployed to Afghanistan.
