It’s true. Sadly, Pier 1 Imports is closing its Yuma store located at 839 W. 32nd St. According to staff, there’s no definite date yet for the closure, but the closing sales are already in full swing.

According to the International Business Times, Pier 1 has closed 70 locations so far this year and has 951 locations operating.

The Dallas Morning News reported that Pier 1 interim CEO Cheryl Bachelder said the company has been having active discussions with landlords on rent terms, but that it’s preparing to close more than 140 locations if they can’t get landlords to cooperate.

The company has been reporting sales decreases and losses this year.

Pier 1 started as a single store in San Mateo, California, in 1962 and grew to more than 1,000 locations companywide.

In case you missed it: A second Dutch Bros. Coffee is coming to the Southgate Mall. The Yuma Planning and Zoning Commission approved a conditional use permit allowing a double drive-thru last Monday.

The city recently issued a building permit for another Dutch Bros. Coffee, this one at 1512 S. 4th Ave.

This second stand will be located at the southwest corner of South 4th Avenue and West Catalina Drive. The old Paul Bensel Jewelers building will be demolished to make way for the new 862-square-foot freestanding coffee stand.

It will have a walk-up window and drive-thru with no interior customer seating. The stand will operate 5:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 5:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday through Saturday. It will have 40 to 50 employees with a shift crew size of four to six people.
