SAN LUIS RIO COLORADO, Son. – The bodies of two people believed to be homicide victims have been discovered here and in nearby El Golfo de Santa Clara in the past three days.
The body of an unidentified man was found Friday morning at a home on Santo Domingo B Avenue and San Alberto Street, in the Colonia Aviación neighborhood on the border city’s southeast side, municipal police said.
Police provided few details about the discovery, but news media in the city, among them Tribuna de San Luis newspaper, reported the man’s hands had been tied behind him and his body buried on the property.
Fishermen at El Golfo, a fishing village on the Sea of Cortes, reported a body floating in the water about 900 yards from shore Wednesday night, but choppy conditions prevented recovery until Thursday morning.
Vizion San Luis R.C., an internet news site in San Luis, and the Noticias newspaper reported that the body of the unidentified male had been bound in a fishing net and attached to an anchor.
2019 has seen a spike in homicides in the San Luis Rio Colorado area, with most of the killings believed to be related to fighting among rival drug traffickers.
According to Sonora’s Public Security Ministry, there have been 43 homicides in the border city across from San Luis, Ariz., from January through July, although news media in the city has recorded higher counts.
However, Mayor Santos Gonzalez pledged that the city will be making progress to reduce the homicide rate.
“In these next months I know we are going to improve a lot, I am sure,” he said in a message posted on social media.
