Yuma Sector Border Patrol agents apprehended a 45-year-old Mexican man convicted of sex with a minor after he illegally crossed into the U.S. near the San Luis Tuesday night.

According to agent Jose Garibay of the Yuma Sector Public Affairs Office, the man and another individual had crossed the border south of Juan Sanchez Boulevard, near Avenue C.

“Agents working in the area found footprints of two individuals heading north and began tracking them,” Garibay said.

After being apprehended, both men were transported to the Yuma Station to be processed for immigration violations, which is when Garibay said agents learned of the 45-year-old man’s previous sex conviction.

Garibay said the conviction stemmed from a 1997 case in Indio, Calif., in which the man was sentenced to serve 36 months of probation for sex with a minor.

The man was deported following his sentencing and has been apprehended five previous times over the years by Yuma Sector Border Patrol agents after entering the country illegally.
