Municipal police in San Luis Rio Colorado, Son., fatally shot a man and woman Monday afternoon after the man allegedly fired on officers who stopped the vehicle he was driving.
The incident occurred about 1 p.m. after at Avenida Libertad and Calle 47, on the city's east side, after a Ford Explorer with California license plates was pulled over for inspection, police told reporters at the scene.
The male driver allegedly got out of the vehicle and began firing with a 9mm handgun, prompting municipal officers to return fire.
The man fell to the ground, police said, while the woman was struck by gunfire as she remained in the vehicle. Police said the woman also had a weapon.
The man, identified as Lino Rosales, died at the scene, while the woman was taken to a hospital where she died.
Police provided no details about what prompted the traffic stop or what might have been the man's reasons for shooting at officers.
The incident comes amid a spike in violence in which the city's homicide tally for 2019 has already exceeded those of each of prior years.
The killings also follow the murder last week of Daniel Armenta, a city police officer slain by shots fired from a passing car as he was driving a police pickup truck. Police are not saying whether the murder of Armenta and the fatal shootings Monday are related.
