Hotel del Sol

Since its closure in the mid-1970s, with the exception of “The Getaway” movie (1994) crew and stars Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger, the interior of the historic Hotel del Sol (Hotel of The Sun), has been seen only by occasional homeless occupants, pigeons and law enforcement units using it for training. During a recent Yuma Police Department K-9 training session, the hotel, built in the Spanish Colonial Revival style and opened in December 1926, was open for an informal inspection, revealing its current condition. Here is the view from the main entrance, looking at the front desk (right), elevator (archway to the left) and stairwell (far left). The archway next to the elevator leads to the bar area. The hotel turns 95 this year and the City of Yuma is in the process of turning the landmark into a transportation hub for downtown Yuma. At a September 2020 city council meeting, a $1.02 million contract was awarded to CORE Construction of Phoenix for the preconstruction services phase of the proposed Hotel del Sol Multi-Modal Transportation Center. The work in the preconstruction phase includes environmental, structural and architectural studies as well as architectural and engineering design.
