The tally of violent deaths continued to climb in San Luis Rio Colorado, Son., over the weekend, as one man was fatally shot and police recovered the bodies of two other suspected homicide victims.
A man identified only as Julian N., a 27-year-old resident of San Luis Rio Colorado, was gunned down about 5 p.m. Friday at a seafood restaurant at Avenida Quintana Roo and Calle 12, on the city’s south side, according to municipal police.
According to witness statements given to local media, a pair of gunmen walked into the establishment and opened fire on the man, who was accompanied by an unidentified woman who escaped injury in the attack.
Sonora state police took over the investigation of the slaying but had yet to detain any suspects on Monday.
The same restaurant was the scene of a prior fatal shooting in February, in which a 24-year-old man was gunned down. No suspect has been taken into custody in his slaying.
State investigators also are following up on the discovery Saturday afternoon by tourists of a woman’s body near a beach at El Golfo de Santa Clara. Police said her body showed signs of violence.
In keeping with a recently passed law, police withheld the surname of the 34-year-old victim, identifying her only as Cindy Aneth “N.”
Located to the south on the Sea of Cortes, El Golfo de Santa Clara falls under the jurisdiction of San Luis Rio Colorado’s municipal government.
On Monday, the body of an unidentified man was found bound and wrapped in a blanket left near an irrigation on the west side of San Luis Rio Colorado, municipal police said.
The slayings came in what is shaping up as a record-setting year of homicides in the border city across from San Luis Ariz. According to Sonora’s public safety ministry, 56 slayings occurred in San Luis Rio Colorado from January through August, making it the city with sixth-highest murder rates.
Statistics for murders in September were not available from the state agency.
