Two cows were killed when the truck transporting them caught fire early Tuesday morning at at milepost 27 on Interstate 8. Wellton firefighters put out the fire but the interstate remained shut down for approximately an hour afterwards.

The Wellton Fire Department responded to a report of a vehicle fire on Interstate 8 involving a semi truck full of cattle early Tuesday morning.

According to a news release issued by the Wellton Fire Department, the incident happened at approximately 3:52 a.m. at milepost 27. Two cows were killed in the fire.

The news release indicated that the driver of the truck reported hearing a loud bang and looked at his side mirror and saw that the rear trailer tire was on fire.

Wellton firefighters were able to put the fire out quickly, but the interstate remained shut down for approximately an hour and traffic was rerouted while the scene was cleared.

Also responding to provide assistance was the Wellton Police Department, Tri Valley ambulance, the Yuma County Sheriff's Office, the Yuma Sector Border Patrol and the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
