A 33-year-old man was arrested on multiple misdemeanor charges Thursday after Yuma police responded to the 200 block of South Main Street for a report of arson in progress.

According to information provided by Yuma police, officers and Yuma Fire Department personnel were dispatched to the location at approximately 4:15 p.m.

Witnesses reported seeing a male subject setting fire to multiple dumpsters in the area.

Officers located the suspect, now identified as 33-year-old Blase Anthony Smith, who allegedly brandished a knife in a threatening manner while yelling at them, police said.

Smith eventually dropped the knife, but reportedly resisted arrest by fighting with police. He was taken into custody after a brief struggle.

A resident of Yuma, Smith was booked into the Yuma County jail on four misdemeanor counts of arson of a structure or property and one of disorderly conduct.

In addition to a misdemeanor probation violation, Smith is also facing a felony charge of resisting arrest for allegedly fighting with the police officers.
