One man has died and several other sheriff’s deputies and Rural/Metro firefighters were injured after being stung by bees Sunday evening.
According to information provided by Yuma County Sheriff Office spokesperson Alfonso Zavala, at approximately 6:26 p.m. deputies received a report of a male victim who was being stung by numerous bees in the 9300 block of East Stetson Street.
Zavala stated that the victim, who has now been identified as 51-year-old Epigmenio Gonzalez, had gone out to his back yard to remove a beehive from a couch when the bees became agitated and began stinging him.
Gonzalez, who was covered in bees, ran to his front yard where he was located by deputies and Rural/Metro firefighters.
Rural/Metro spokesperson Charly McMurdie said firefighters immediately began spraying Gonzalez with water so paramedics and deputies could remove him from the scene.
Gonzalez was transported to Yuma Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. Next of Kin has been notified.
A female victim, at the same residence, was also transported to YRMC with numerous bee stings.
Several sheriff deputies and Rural Metro personnel were also stung, however; none required medical attention.
“It doesn’t take long for bee poison to affect someone’s system,” McMurdie said. “You can have a mild reaction localized to the area if the sting, or a serious reaction from a bee allergy.”
