According to the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), about half of Americans are currently trying to lose weight, many of them employing strategies like switching from peanut M&M’s to the plain variety, or drinking more Cherry Coke to increase their intake of fruit.

Love is in the air, and everyone knows … including the feral cats that recently appeared in my neighborhood.

Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao did the right thing when she put the brakes on the Obama administration’s regulatory mandate that would have forced an expensive technology called dedicated short-range communication (DSRC) in all new cars and trucks sold in America. The Obama rule would …

I remember when New England lost a Super Bowl it should have won, Tom Brady’s wife voiced none-too-nice sentiments against Patriot receivers who dropped passes and Giants fans who were rubbing salt in Brady’s wounds.

There’s nothing wrong with being wealthy. What matters is how one got to be that way. Far too often the economic elites and the political well-connected manage to exploit their power and status to enrich themselves at the expense of the average taxpayer. It’s called “crony capitalism” and th…

I recently read a Facebook post from someone who just moved to Yuma and they were blown away by how friendly people here are. She had driven around, checking out parks, neighborhoods and other sites, and people everywhere waved to her.

My wife and I went back to see one of the places we would visit during our courtship — an eatery that brought back special memories involving many great people.

During the years I lived in Manhattan I got used to sleeping through screeching sirens, revving engines and even, sadly, the occasional cry for help. Here in Central California, things are so quiet that a falling pine cone can be jarring.

As the polar vortex swept across the upper Midwest last week, the temperature in Milwaukee was minus 22 degrees, with a wind chill of 35 to 45 below.

As our elected legislators make their way to the capitol to manage the state’s budget, public safety, business regulations and so many more issues, the Yuma Education Advocacy Council is looking forward to working with them — and members of our community — to improve education for each of ou…

I didn’t watch Maroon 5’s halftime performance during Sunday’s Super Bowl, but I saw the reaction on Twitter.

There are several movies that I have never watched all the way through. One of them is "Groundhog Day."

CNN’s “Town Hall” Monday night, featuring fast-rising Sen. Kamala Harris, was moderately helpful in assessing the California freshman’s presidential candidacy, but far more useful in evaluating what television must do in the critically important 2020 race.

The story in today’s paper about the female Lyft driver who was killed in Phoenix on Monday hit too close to home.

To me, this is complete madness. Gannett laid off journalists across the country. That’s not surprising. What shocked me is that the Gannett-owned Arizona Republic laid off two, including cartoonist Steve Benson, the 1993 Pulitzer Prize winner for cartooning and a finalist for the award four…

William Barr is relatively qualified, especially for a Trump nominee. In fact, he held the office he has been nominated for, attorney general, under President George H. W. Bush from 1991 to 1993. One would assume that prior experience would have prepared him for a strong showing in his confi…

Already we are into the fourth week of January and for many of us, our New Year’s resolutions are well underway. According to an article published on GoSkills.com, the top 10 resolutions include: exercise more, lose weight, get organized, learn a new skill or hobby, live life to the fullest,…

I was surprised to read that depression and suicide rates are highest in the Mountain West states. But many, in particular men, in these rugged areas keep their struggles to themselves and don’t seek help, and access to care is difficult in the rural West.

Someone had a cautionary tale for me. He was telling me about two older people who got married. By “older,” he meant in their 50s, which seems younger to me all the time.

My wife celebrated her birthday recently, and her older sister made it an extra special event by taking her little sister on a trip down memory lane.
