Problem isn’t guns; it’s the availability
Recently, there have been Letters to the Editor regarding the old theme that “guns don’t kill people, people kill people.” It’s time for me to disagree. AVAILABILITY kills people! In this country, anyone, anytime has access to purchasing a gun. I have no objection to hunting rifles, even handguns with “normal” magazines, but I mightily disagree with the population owning high powered ARs and high capacity magazines. The dictionary definition is “a noun, a rapid-fire magazine-fed automatic rifle designed for infantry use.”
When you reach a certain age, in order to drive a car, you must take a class and pass a test, before you get your license to drive. Why would not that be OK for gun ownership? Both could be lethal weapons. We need background checks for all licensed guns.
As far as buy backs for ARs. No, No, No, people made a CHOICE. People should learn to take ownership of their choices! New law, three options: (1) you destroy the weapon, (2) you hand it over to your local police departments to destroy, or (3) you use and leave it at your local gun club. If anyone is caught with an AR weapon, there is a mandatory $10,000 fine.
Don’t punish guns, punish people instead
“A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed,” is what our Second Amendment reads.
Why are you blaming acts of violence on weapons instead of people? Every time there is a shooting people look toward gun rights instead of focusing on the real problem …the person who did it! What made them do this? What kind of background did they have? And most importantly, did they purchase it legally? If someone has the intention to do bad, they will find a way to do bad even if it means getting it illegally. So why ban certain weapons? Why try to take what is rightfully ours which was given to us Dec. 15, 1791.
We need to focus on the people who create act of violence instead of focusing on what weapon they used. Guns can’t go out and create mass killings, people do. I support my second and I know there are many people out there that will stand with me to protect our rights. Guns are used to protect us and our loved ones from danger, recreational shooting, and hunting, not the way people are making a reputation for it.
Think about it, it’s not just guns that create mass killings, you’re forgetting about blunt objects, knives, hangings, drownings, poison gas, poison, fires, aircraft, and of course alcohol that are also used. A person who has the intentions to do bad will use anything in their power to do so. Sadly that’s how human beings work. Some of us take out our frustrations in unhealthy ways. And that’s why they need to focus on investigating the real question as to why did they do this? What made them create an act of hatred? There is always and will always be an answer for all this and taking guns away is not the answer or the solution. It’s the people that protect the Second Amendment that this is impacting not the “bad guys.” They are making more rules for us to follow. Make things right. Punish people, not guns!
