Seven local wrestlers from three different schools will have the opportunity to compete for a state championship today.

Yuma Catholic’s Tevon Mellor (132 pounds), Jose Macias (145), Jacob Webb (195), Yuma High’s Mario Bugarin (113), Servando Campos (170), Jayden Dobson (220) and Antelope’s Kristopher Reyes (106) will participate in the Division III/Division IV semifinals today.

At the end of day one, Yuma High sits in second place in the Division III standings with 44 points. Gila Ridge has 11.5 points, which is good enough for 28th place.

In Division IV, Yuma Catholic is in third place with 58 points, just 21.5 points behind first place Morenci. Antelope checks in with 15 points at 20th, while San Pasqual is in 29th with 8 points.


It was a rough opening day for local girl wrestlers at the AIA Girls State Championship. Nine total girls participated on Friday, however, just three will have a chance on Saturday to win a semifinals match and reach the championship round.

San Pasqual’s Julia Gutierrez (225 pounds), Gila Ridge’s Madison Bocanegra (225) and Kofa’s Carolina Moreno (125) each went 3-0 on Friday and guaranteed themselves of placing.

Cibola’s Luz Badillio, Gila Ridge’s Jaymi Baker and San Luis’ Jennifer Peralta are still alive in the consolation rounds.

After day one, Gila Ridge sits in 11th, San Pasqual in 17th, Kofa 19th, Cibola and San Luis are tied for 40th and Yuma High is in 52nd place.
